A Trailblazer in Energy Law: The Story of Anushree Bardhan

A successful career often takes shape through unexpected turns, and Anushree Bardhan’s journey into the energy sector is a testament to this. As an independent legal practitioner with nearly 12 years of experience specializing in the electricity sector, Anushree has established herself as a formidable presence in energy law. However, her path to this profession was anything but conventional.
From Uncertainty to Legal Expertise
During her school years, law was not a career she actively considered. Like many students excelling in academics, she initially leaned towards Science and contemplated a future in engineering. However, an aversion to Chemistry led her to rethink her choices. Instead, she opted for Humanities, a decision she now considers one of her best. She pursued Sociology Honours at Miranda House, Delhi University, where she excelled academically.
Despite her success in Sociology, Anushree found herself at a crossroads when considering her future. Intrigued by law, she prepared for both MBA and law entrance exams but found herself drawn to the latter. Gaining admission to the Campus Law Centre at the Faculty of Law, Delhi University, marked the beginning of her legal journey.
Stepping into the Energy Sector
Throughout her LLB, Anushree actively sought practical exposure by interning at various organizations. Her final internship with Senior Advocate M.G. Ramachandran, a pioneer in energy law, proved to be a turning point. This experience introduced her to the intricacies of legal practice in the energy sector. Today, 12 years later, she has successfully established her independent legal practice and found her niche in this highly specialized field.
Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Opportunities
Unlike many professionals who face hurdles as women entering technical fields, Anushree considers herself fortunate. She attributes her confidence to the unwavering support of mentors and colleagues who encouraged her to take charge of cases, present arguments, and engage directly with clients from the early stages of her career. This early exposure helped her develop resilience and adaptability in a complex legal landscape.
Inspiration and Milestones
Anushree credits her mentor, Senior Advocate M.G. Ramachandran, as a guiding force in her career. His dedication to the legal profession has been an inspiration, and she strives to emulate his commitment in her own practice.
Among her many professional milestones, one case stands out. During a high-stakes matter before the Honourable Supreme Court, she had to step in to present arguments when the designated senior advocate was unavailable. Facing multiple senior advocates from the opposing side was daunting, but she diligently presented her case. While the final judgment did not rule in her favor, the judges acknowledged her efforts and contributions—an affirmation that remains one of her proudest moments.
Making an Impact in Energy Law
Every legal matter Anushree undertakes contributes to shaping regulatory certainty in the energy sector. One particularly impactful case was Energy Watchdog v. Central Electricity Regulatory Commission & Ors. (2017) 14 SCC 80, where she represented Prayas (Energy Group). The decision in this case significantly advanced legal clarity in the energy sector.
Currently, her focus is on expanding her independent legal practice while continuing to contribute meaningfully, particularly in the field of renewable energy.
Encouraging Diversity and Inclusion in Energy Law
Anushree firmly believes that visibility is crucial for encouraging gender diversity. Seeing women excel in specialized fields like energy law inspires young professionals to envision similar career paths. Throughout her career, she has worked alongside exceptionally hardworking and intelligent women in the courtroom, drawing inspiration from their perseverance. She hopes that her journey, in turn, serves as motivation for others entering the field.
Advice for Aspiring Professionals
For students interested in energy law, Anushree emphasizes the importance of internships. Hands-on experience in specialized law offices can provide valuable insights into the field. She also advises fresh graduates to consider starting their careers in smaller law offices, where they can gain exposure to various responsibilities early on.
Energy law is a highly technical field, and new professionals often feel overwhelmed. However, expertise develops over time, and what matters most is asking the right questions and continuously seeking clarity. Persistence and a willingness to learn make tackling complex cases more manageable.
The Future of Women in the Energy Industry
Anushree envisions a bright and promising future for women in the energy industry. She believes that fostering an inclusive culture is key to success. Providing flexible work policies, mentorship programs, and leadership opportunities can help women thrive professionally while managing personal responsibilities.
Cultural change, according to Anushree, begins with recognizing the value of diverse perspectives. Normalizing work-life integration and challenging biases are essential steps toward progress. By fostering respect, inclusion, and equal opportunity, the energy sector can create a future where women are not just participants but leaders.
Beyond Work: A Passion for Travel and Balance
Outside of her professional commitments, Anushree is passionate about traveling. She and her husband make it a priority to explore new places, whether in India or abroad. Court holidays and long weekends offer much-needed breaks, allowing her to rejuvenate and maintain a balanced lifestyle.
During regular work months, she finds solace in meditation, reading, and watching content on OTT platforms. These activities help her de-stress and appreciate life’s simple joys, such as spending quality time with family.
Conclusion
Anushree Bardhan’s journey into the energy sector showcases the power of determination, adaptability, and perseverance. From an uncertain start to establishing her own legal practice, her story is an inspiring example of how passion and hard work can lead to success in specialized fields. As she continues to contribute to energy law and advocate for greater gender inclusivity, she remains a role model for aspiring professionals in the industry.
