Developing India’s interoperable Smart Grid

24 February 2025

The report examines the critical role of smart grids in India’s energy transition, emphasising digital innovation, interoperability, and regulatory advancements. It introduces the Smart Grid Observatory (SGO)—a collaborative platform established under the EU-India Clean Energy and Climate Partnership (CECP) in collaboration with National Smart Grid Mission, Ministry of Power—to drive the adoption of smart grid technologies in India.

The report highlights key challenges in developing an interoperable smart grid ecosystem, including standardisation gaps, data governance issues, vendor diversity, and cybersecurity concerns. It outlines a roadmap for addressing these challenges through harmonised communication networks, updated regulations, financial incentives, and digital infrastructure development.

The report proposes the idea of an India Energy Stack (IES), a nationally shared digital public infrastructure designed to enhance data exchange, analytics, and real-time decision-making across the energy sector. By fostering cross-sectoral collaboration, policy alignment, and technological innovation, this report provides a comprehensive strategy for achieving a resilient, efficient, and sustainable energy future for India.
