India Energy Stack: A Digital Public Infrastructure for India’s Power Sector

28 June 2025

India’s energy sector is undergoing rapid transformation to meet the demands of economic growth, rising renewable energy integration, and its Net Zero commitments by 2070. However, fragmented digital systems, poor interoperability, and the absence of unique identifiers for assets, consumers, and transactions impede efficient grid management and innovation. Inspired by the success of Aadhaar, UPI, and other Digital Public Infrastructures (DPIs), the Ministry of Power proposes the India Energy Stack (IES) — a unified, open, and modular digital backbone for the power sector. IES will provide unique digital identifiers, open APIs, consent-based data sharing, and interoperable services to enable seamless energy transactions, enhanced grid reliability, consumer empowerment, and scalable innovation. By building on DPI principles, IES aims to foster trusted data exchange, unlock new energy fintech and market opportunities, and create a resilient, future-ready energy ecosystem for India.
