About the Role:
We are seeking a highly motivated Research Fellow committed to join our team and meaningfully contribute to cutting-edge research on energy transition pathways currently being pursued/proposed under the global drive towards Net-Zero. The role involves exploring and assessing current/proposed pathways to sustainable energy systems, and analysing policy frameworks essential for their efficacy, within the context of India’s stated climate and development goals. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams and engage with stakeholders to advance the global and India’s energy transition agenda.
To deliver ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047, the energy sector will need an integrated energy planning approach that is adequate to fuel India’s economic development trajectory. This would require assessment of technology options, investment needs for alternative pathways and the regulatory reforms needed to ensure their respective viability.
The ‘Research Fellow’ will work with the co-chairs of the Energy Transition vertical to develop and build upon the various elements of the vertical. The Researcher will engage with and drive partnership with relevant policymakers, utilities, academia and industry leaders. Responsibilities include conducting independent and innovative research, data analysis, publishing high-impact papers, support training programs and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Energy Policy & Technical Research
- Conduct research on energy transition pathways, including integration of renewable energy, decarbonization, and increasing penetration of electricity.
- Analyse policy frameworks and develop recommendations for just and equitable energy transitions.
- Prepare technical reports, policy briefs, and recommendations for government agencies and private stakeholders.
- Collaborate with stakeholders from government, industry, and academia to drive impactful research outcomes.
- Develop quantitative and qualitative models to assess the challenges and opportunities of energy transitions.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present this research at international conferences.
- Stakeholder Engagement & Capacity Building
- Engage with policymakers, industry leaders, think tanks, and research institutions (within India and Globally) to share insights and develop meaningful and practical options for energy transition.
- Design and deliver training programs, policy dialogues, and stakeholder engagement initiatives like workshops to facilitate knowledge-building and sharing.
- Support training programs for government officials, industry professionals, and stakeholders, ensuring practical application of research findings.
- Collaborate with global and domestic institutions to promote best practices and scalable energy solutions.
- Contribute to securing funding through grant applications and partnerships.
- Strategic Planning & Project Execution
- Work with senior leadership and internal team to define research priorities, program goals, and success metrics.
- Assist in project planning, execution, proposal development and reporting for funders and stakeholders.
- Continuously assess program impact and suggest refinements based on emerging trends and research findings.
- Contribute actively to project/team discussions and work on various team/group specific strategic initiatives.
Qualifications:
- PhD (or equivalent) in Energy Studies, Energy Engineering, Energy Markets, Energy Economics, or a related field with expertise in energy systems and transitions.
- 7+ years of relevant experience in India’s Power and Energy sector.
- Strong analytical skills with experience in both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
- Proven track record of publications in high-impact journals/ conferences.
- Familiarity with global energy policies and frameworks for sustainable development.
- Ability to engage with government, industry, and academia to drive impactful research and policy discussions.
- Experience in conducting and facilitating knowledge-sharing events, including workshops, debates, and seminars.
- Experience with energy modelling tools such as Python, MATLAB will be an asset.
- Familiarity with stakeholder engagement processes and participatory research methods.
- Experience with machine learning applications will be an asset
- Experience in working with the energy utilities would be an asset.
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently, and collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams in a fast-paced environment.
