A new research paper, “World Energy Transition outside the West: A pragmatic stocktake of ten non-Western countries,” by Jean-Michel Glachant and Ramakrishnan Atreya, is now available.

Rather than starting from pledges and targets, the paper measures what ten countries, China, India, Indonesia, South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Chile and Türkiye, together holding roughly half the world’s population, have actually built over the decade 2013–2024: new sources of primary energy, the manufacturing and adoption of transition equipment, and the mining and refining of the minerals it requires.

Three findings stand out. The transition is real and measurable in most of these countries. It is not one process but several: each country follows a different path. And the data needed to track it remain thin outside China and India. Read more here!
